Workshop details:

Right at the start of Hatha Yoga Pradipika (the classical text from which Hatha Yoga originated) we are told that the purpose of Hatha Yoga is to prepare for the practice of Meditation.

This day will involve a look at the theory of meditation from a Hatha Yoga as well as from a Tibetan Buddhist perspective.

There will be asana, as well as pranayama, discussion and practical experience of meditation techniques.

Structure:

Introduction:  What is Yoga? What is meditation and why do it?
Hatha Yoga:  Using the breath as an object of focus.
Meditation practice using the breathing.
Lunch.
The concepts of Klesha and Kriya : the practice of purification.
Purification Breathing.
Tibetan Healing Exercises: Using sensations as an object of focus.
Discussion on Meditation: The Path of Wisdom.

About the tutor:

Maarten Vermaase is a very highly respected tutor in this field. He is a Diploma Course Tutor (teacher trainer) for the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) and has practised and studied Yoga since the early 1970s.

He has studied Hatha Yoga, primarily under Robert Van Heeckeren, Tibetan Buddhist Meditation and Yoga
and Healing Exercises with numerous Lamas and teachers from the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions.

He teaches extensively in Oxford and London, and runs regular workshops, retreats and BWY Meditation Modules for groups nationwide.

Participants should have at least one year’s experience of yoga practice, be familiar with Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) and ideally they have some experience of breath work.
