As a teacher how do you evaluate the effectiveness of your instruction? How do you know if your words are understood in the way you intend? How do you refine language in such a way that helps students learn? This intensive allows for the space to contemplate what is best practice in the language of teaching.
Language, intrinsic to the skill of teaching, can facilitate a deeply felt experience of unity. The power of language can also disturb and disunite. As teachers, language becomes a powerful means through which we convey the knowledge held by the yoga tradition, as well as it’s unfolding experience. Hence, in ancient India the power of the sound syllables to create, forming the basis of all words while holding the seeds of knowledge, was considered Divine and called Matrka Sakti, which translates to mean “little mothers” and worshipped as a form of the Mother Goddess.
To teach means to impart knowledge through language in a way that is accessible and generous holding respect for its transformative power – this requires personal reflection, honest self-evaluation and listening. To enquire into language: delves into the essence and deeper purpose of teaching; guides the nature of the learning process; invites people into their own uniquely felt experience. To recognise the power of language and draw upon it as a means to uplift and empower, transforms teaching from a pedestal approach to one that requires agency. This remains the highest of teaching arts.
This teachers’ intensive provides:
– Reflective processes for contemplating and refining language which includes working with intention, active/reflective voice and understanding how students learn best
– Space for practice and self-enquiry regarding self-language
– A supportive space for coming together with other teachers in an inclusive and empowered learning environment
The day includes both asana and teaching practice, group work, journaling, and dialogue. Please bring a journal and pen.
